My work represents America's contemporary landscape from the way I’ve experienced living in neighborhoods and driving into urban centers over periods of my life. Whether, I am exploring the moon's surface through a telescope on a dimly lit suburban street, driving past tracts of new developments, or walking down a city street, I am continuously being provoked to stop, survey, and record, my surroundings. Ultimately, my drawings, paintings, and mixed media constructions, come from the fragments of light, visual vibrations, and sounds, emanating from these spaces.
I have spent the last 13 years as an adjunct art instructor, thesis advisor, and visiting instructor for the University of North Florida (alum 99') and Jacksonville University. I challenge my students no matter what level of experience to make art fearlessly from a rigorous practice and intent to create authenticity.
In 2009, I earned an MFA in Interdisciplinary Studio and Theory from Maine College of Art; and soon after, became director of the Art in Public Places percent-for-art program for the City of Jacksonville (2010-2019). Art has been one common denominator to my life's most meaningful adventures including living in the subsistence community of Kwethluk, Alaska during summer 2021 where I assisted in the painting and educational programming of a large-scale mural project at the Ket'acik & Aapalluk Memorial School.
My solo exhibition "Surroundings" runs from September 7 - October 12, 2022 at Florida State College Jacksonville, South Gallery.
